New Ultrasound Technique in Development for Finding Early Cancer

It is well understood that finding cancer early can allow for the most effective treatment, and in many cases, save lives.  Researchers in Europe involved in the TAMIRUT project are diligently collaborating to perfect new highly sensitive ultrasound equipment.  The new ultrasound equipment will help detect even the smallest cancers that would be missed with current ultrasound methods.

The scientists have developed a new contrast agent to work with the new ultrasound equipment to enhance the ultrasound images.  The contrast agent uses microscopic gas filled balls “microbubbles” that stick to target cells and show early-stage cancer.  This new ultrasound method will show cancer that might be missed on biopsies.  The researchers are looking forward to starting clinical trials with the new ultrasound technique because this appears to be a promising way of detecting cancer earlier.
