Hematology is a medical specialty available at our Los Angeles treatment center that encompasses the science of blood, blood-producing organs and blood disorders. Hematology in Los Angeles includes the genesis, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of blood and blood-borne diseases.

Blood contains most of the energy, nourishment and defense our bodies need to sustain life. In addition to treating cancer, a hematologist treats patients with blood clotting disorders such as hemophilia, anemia, Gaucher’s disease, myelodysplasia and myelodysplastic syndrome. At the Beverly Hills Cancer Center hematology department, our hematologists study, diagnose and treat benign as well as cancer-related blood disorders.

They work with medical technologists who analyze blood in our on-site lab as well as hematopathologists who are available for further review and evaluation of laboratory tests if necessary. Additionally, they use our state-of-the-art electronic medical records (EMR) system to speed the delivery of hematologic reports.

When Should You See a Hematologist?

Hematologists are an invaluable component of any comprehensive medical team, although they often perform their duties in the background and may not receive the recognition they deserve. They often work to support your oncologist, internist, or another primary physician who relies on the hematologist to interpret test results and monitor your bloodwork.

The most common diseases addressed by hematologists include leukemia, hemophilia, sepsis, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia, anemia, deep vein thrombosis, and thalassemia, all of which can be extremely serious and in some cases life-threatening. Hematologists have the in-depth knowledge, training, and experience to guide your treatment and its recovery, and as such, they are indispensable.

What Can You Expect From The Treatment Process?

As a first step, your hematologist will carefully review your medical history and perform a physical examination. They will ask you about your symptoms and possibly have you fill out a detailed questionnaire. You will undergo blood tests, which are then evaluated to determine any underlying medical conditions that may be causing your symptoms.

A treatment plan will then be prepared according to your unique blood type. It may involve injections, IV infusions, or blood transfusions. Transfusions can take anywhere from 1-6 hours, depending on your overall health and the nature of your condition.

About Hematology

Hematology is a field of medicine devoted to the research, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of blood disorders as well as ailments related to the lymphatic system.

If you have a condition that affects your red or white blood cells, or your platelets, lymph nodes, blood vessels, spleen, or bone marrow, then it may be time to visit a hematologist. They will perform diagnostic testing, including biopsies, to get to the root of your issues quickly and accurately. They may assess whether your blood is clotting properly, monitor your blood while you receive chemotherapy or immunotherapy, measure the amount of protein and enzymes in your blood, and be on hand during a bone marrow transplant or stem cell transfer.
