In the world of medical diagnostics and imaging, nuclear medicine is a crucial component. It is a method of administering radioactive substances to locate and effectively treat disease. With regard to cancer, nuclear medicine is invaluable, allowing surgeons to gather information about both structure and function, giving them the ability to operate with precision and certainty. It can be used to gather medical information that would otherwise require surgery. Additionally, it may be used to diagnose disease during very early stages, allowing doctors to operate with a higher success rate.

How It Works

Nuclear medicine makes use of radiopharmaceutical materials. These are administered to the patient intravenously. Once in the patient's blood stream, the radiopharmaceutical can travel to specific organs or cellular receptors. Once this occurs, special types of cameras work with computers to provide very precise pictures about the area being imaged. Nuclear medicine gives the ability to image the progress of a disease based upon cellular function and physiology. With other imaging services, disease progress is detected from the outside in, and is based upon physical changes in the tissue anatomy.

In this sense, nuclear medicine is radiology done inside out, also called endo-radiology. It records results based upon radiation emitting from within the body, as opposed to generating radiation externally, as is the case with X-rays.
