Beverly Hills Cancer Center is a pioneer in whole health and wellness medicine and has established relationships with professionals that can provide excellent holistic treatments. We utilize a team approach headed by our physicians, integrating some of the best science and technology that western medicine has to offer, with proven holistic cancer care healing techniques that can strengthen and support the immune system to improve the healing process.

BHCC doesn't offer this onsite currently, but, we believe that this can help with healing (mind, body, spirit) and we can refer patients to trusted providers we work with for these services. These services are generally not covered by insurance.

Our multi-dimensional approach encompasses: nutritional education, psychotherapy, massage, Eastern medical traditions (acupuncture, Tai Chi and herbal medicine) and the self-healing modalities of yoga, meditation, relaxation exercise, guided imagery, lifestyle modification and environmental education.

For people living with cancer and other illnesses, these integrative services can transform the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of their lives. We provide treatment strategies and options that empower individuals to achieve their optimum state of wellbeing every step of the way. Our unsurpassed holistic cancer care and patient advocacy programs enable our patients to pursue their highest priority, reclaiming their TOTAL health: mind, body, and spirit. In conjunction with Western Medicine, we believe that integrative care services can be beneficial for patients - further treating the whole patient, mind, body and spirit.

Lifestyle Changes for a Better Life with Cancer

The American Cancer Society reports that lifestyle changes can make a difference for cancer survivors and those who are living with cancer, particularly nutrition and physical activity. Research has shown that being overweight or obese increases the risk of cancer recurrence, reduces survival rates, and increases the risk of other chronic diseases. Exercising and eating healthy, nutritious foods can also help you feel better, both physically and mentally.

Nutrition

Cancer treatments, including radiation therapy, surgery, and chemotherapy can affect your eating habits and the way your body digests, absorbs, and uses food, as well as your body’s nutritional needs. While you are receiving treatment, your nutritional priorities are to:

  • Ensure your needs for nutrients and calories are met
  • Avoid losing muscle mass
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Improve your quality of life during treatment

Some patients have difficulty eating enough to meet their nutrient and calorie requirements during cancer treatment. If that is the case for you, your doctor may recommend nutritional supplements such as high protein, high calorie drinks and specific vitamin and mineral supplements.

Antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin E, phytochemicals (plant-based chemicals), and carotenoids (the compounds that give fruits and vegetables color) help prevent cell damage from chemical reactions with oxygen. Studies suggest that eating more vegetables and fruits, a good source of antioxidants, may lower the risk of cancer, including a recurrence of the disease in the body.

It is advised that cancer patients or survivors avoid saturated fats, as there is some evidence that these fats may increase cancer risk. Although the link between trans fats and cancer risk or survival is not clear, it is known that trans-fat can raise cholesterol levels and have harmful effects on the heart, and cancer patients should avoid them. Trans fats are found in margarine, snack foods, and baked goods containing partially hydrogenated oils.

Physical Activity

Exercise is not only safe during cancer treatment but also has many benefits, including better bone health, muscle strength, and quality of life. Physical activity and exercise during cancer treatment can help in many ways, including:

  • Maintaining or improving physical abilities
  • Helping to control your weight
  • Improving balance and reducing the risk of falls
  • Increasing circulation, including blood flow to the legs
  • Relieving tiredness and fatigue
  • Reducing the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease
  • Lowering the risk of anxiety or depression
  • Raising self-esteem and improving quality of life

You can add physical activity to your daily life by going dancing, riding a bike, walking around your neighborhood, or doing any activity you find enjoyable. Keep your exercise program easy and fun to relieve stress and live a better life with cancer.

Stress Reduction

Minimizing stress plays an important role in getting well and staying well. Recent studies suggest that combating stress is critical in fighting illness, including cancer. At Beverly Hills Cancer Center, we understand that a tranquil environment, free from stress, is a fundamental in the healing process. In our state-of-the-art facility, we have worked hard to create a soothing, supportive, and caring environment, conducive to effective treatment.
