Anal cancer is treatable, particularly when identified in the early stages. The first step is an accurate diagnosis. At Beverly Hills Cancer Center, we offer an array of the world’s most advanced cancer testing procedures, with testing, diagnosis, laboratory work, and treatment all available in a private center that provides an atmosphere of comfort and healing.

Anal cancer diagnosis

Anal cancer can be detected in several ways, including during a standard rectal exam. Your anal canal and rectum may also be examined with a special lighted tool called an anoscope to reveal abnormalities visually. In other cases, an ultrasound test may be performed where a device that emits sound waves in the body is used to produce a visual representation of the area. Diagnosis is confirmed through a biopsy in which tissue samples are removed and sent to our on-site lab for testing and evaluation may be performed.

Anal cancer evaluations to determine cancer spread

You may require an additional set of tests if anal cancer is confirmed. These tests will allow our team of internationally recognized cancer doctors to understand whether cancer has spread to the lymph nodes or other areas of your body.

  • MRI
  • PET scan

These tests will reveal the “stage” of your cancer. Medications and other treatments are available for every stage of the disease. Your treatment plan will be designed to treat the stage of cancer you are experiencing.

What treatments are used for anal cancer?

Chemo and radiation

Anal cancer treatments have advanced far beyond what was available in the past. Most anal cancers that have not spread are treatable with a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.

Immunotherapy

For anal cancers that have metastasized (established in other areas of your system), another treatment protocol is needed. Many cases have been successfully resolved with advanced immunotherapy treatments. This groundbreaking approach involves a medication that blocks a protein that prevents the body’s cells from attacking and eradicating cancer cells.

Surgery

In some cases, surgery may be required. Based on the extent of the cancer spread, two surgical options are available, local resection (less invasive) and abdominoperineal resection for larger tumors.

Clinical trials

At Beverly Hills Cancer Center, we are often engaged in clinical trials for new treatments.

What are the types of anal cancer?

Anal cancers appear in various forms. When cancerous cells are discovered within the anal canal, it is generally referred to as anal cancer, but is a specific form of cancer:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma: These cancers develop in the inner lining of the anus, called the mucosa.
  • Adenocarcinoma: These cancers develop first in the glandular (epithelial tissue) cells responsible for releasing body substances.
  • Basal cell carcinoma: These cancers appear on the skin surrounding the anus.
  • Melanoma: These cancers start in specific skin cells, called melanocytes. The onset of disease begins with a change in the skin in the anus region.
  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST): These tumors are rare, with symptoms that include bleeding and pain, difficulties with defecation, and in some cases, urinary symptoms.
